Daou
DAOU is dedicated to crafting Bordeaux-style wines that rival the best in the world, elevating and showcasing Paso Robles as the next frontier for ultra-luxury Cabernet Sauvignon.
When brothers Georges and Daniel Daou set forth across the globe to find an unparalleled terroir for producing Cabernet Sauvignon, they staked everything on what would become known as DAOU Mountain in the rugged coastal range of Paso Robles. They knew that they could not only produce remarkable wines from their own hidden gem estate, but from top vineyards across the region.
DAOU is today the culmination of a lifelong dream, crafting some of California’s most noteworthy wines while creating experiences that redefine what is possible. Welcome to the world of DAOU.
Georges and Daniel Daou are inseparable as brothers, best friends, and visionaries. DAOU is the realization of their childhood dream and a testament to the timeless bonds of love and family. This is the story of how it all began.
As children growing up in Beirut, Georges, Daniel, and their sisters, Marie Jo and Michelle, fell in love with the rural way of life during visits to their grandfather’s ancient olive groves. Their childhood was steeped in Lebanese traditions of generous hospitality, family values, and faith. But in 1973, their world was turned upside down.
A missile, fired to begin the Lebanese civil war, struck the sidewalk in front of the Daou family home sending shrapnel tearing through the house. For two years, the family rebuilt and recovered from serious injuries, but when the war escalated in 1975, Joseph and Marie made the courageous and difficult decision to save the family, leave everything behind, and move to France to give their children peace and hope for a brighter future.
The family emigrated to Paris and, later, Cannes in the south of France. In France, Joseph
developed a passion for wine, and it was here, surrounded by vineyards and centuries
of winemaking tradition, that Georges and Daniel first dreamt of a life in wine.
After a worldwide search for the perfect terroir to grow Cabernet Sauvignon that rivaled the great Bordeaux wines their father loved, brothers Georges and Daniel Daou discovered a singular mountain ascending from the coastal forests of Paso Robles.
This steep expanse of earth and wild grass would become known as DAOU Mountain, and within a few years it would produce DAOU’s Soul of a Lion—a wine that forever changed the trajectory of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon.
DAOU Mountain shares a climate similar to Napa Valley and features calcareous clay soils similar to those of Bordeaux, with an elevation reaching 2,200 feet. The steep slopes here reach up to 56 percent, with uniform exposure to the elements across the estate. These conditions produce some of the highest grape phenolics in the world. And with its diverse terrain, unlimited potential and rich heritage, greater Paso Robles provides endless possibilities for the wines of DAOU.
