Domìni Veneti

THE STORY

Although Cantina Valpolicella Negrar has been producing quality wines for 85 years, Domini Veneti was created in 1989 to showcase the distinctive terroirs in the Valpolicella Classico area. Working with more than 230 farmers (who farm over 700 hectares), Domìni Veneti is extremely responsible & show the utmost respect to the environment.

In 1989, Cantina Valpolicella Negar started an extensive quality project that pinpointed locations particularly suited to vineyards. This in-depth study was conducted alongside wine-growers in order to produce high quality wines.  Over the years their meticulous work has enabled the production of new cru wines and the Domìni Veneti label.

Domìni Veneti is the name used for the best wines in the winery. These wines are named after the lands rules by the Serenissima Republic of Venice in the 16^th century when it was at the height of the power.  The Valpolicella area came under its rule around that time. Today, the golden age is reflected in the quality and reputation of the wines. As a result of this long-term project, the winery now produces the most exquisite wines that capture the hallmarks of the region.

AMARONE

The history of Amarone is interwoven with our history. It was 1936 when Adelino Lucchese, the cellar manager of Cantina Sociale Valpolicella Negrar, noticed a barrel of Recioto that had been forgotten. The Recioto had by then “scapà” (escaped) and had become dry. A serious mistake, given that historically Recioto was (and is) a prestigious sweet wine. All the same, before dismissing it as a loss, Adelino wanted it to be tasted by Gaetano Dall’Ora, the current president of the cooperative that had been founded in 1933.

Gaetano brought the glass of this unknown wine to his nose and immediately tasted it. The discovery was surprising. Genially inspired and inebriated by so many aromas and flavours, the president exclaimed: “This is not an amaro, it’s an amarone!” (amaro means bitter in Italian). A new name had been coined: Amarone, now famous worldwide.
